The Descalzas Reales offers free entry on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 16:00 to 18:30 (last entry 17:30) for EU citizens and residents and citizens of Ibero-American countries. You must bring proof: a passport, national ID, or work permit. Ask at the ticket desk and they will check it.

The free window: the reality of crowds

This is a genuine money-saving window if you qualify and you do not mind crowds. The problem is everyone else knows about it. A Wednesday or Thursday at 16:00, you will stand in a line for the ticket desk. Once inside, the relicario is a small room and a full group fills it, all leaning in at objects the size of a coin. A guide will rush you through faster than on a weekday morning because the groups are larger. Some visitors have told me the crowd ruins the experience; some have said they did not mind. It depends on your tolerance for elbows.

Is it worth waiting for the free afternoon?

If you are already in Madrid and you are EU-eligible, and you do not have rigid plans for Wednesday or Thursday evening, sure. The €9 is real money saved. But if you have to defer your Madrid trip or you want a quiet morning to look at the frescoes, the €9 is worth spending. The morning visit to the Descalzas is worth the €9. The same visit in a crowd, free, is still worth the €9.

Booking and no-shows

You cannot book the free afternoon online; you have to show up. Because it is free and no one has paid a deposit, some people book a time and do not show up. This means the queue can move slowly and your entry time might slip. Come early if you want the 16:00 slot, or come at 17:00 when fewer people show up and the queue has cleared out.

Insider tip

If you are EU-eligible but you value a calm morning over €9 saved, skip the free afternoon and book the €9 ticket at tickets.patrimonionacional.es for a Tuesday or Wednesday morning at 10:00. The experience is cleaner and the savings are only €9.
